Leyla Amir-Egyptian Raks Shaabi

Raks Shaabi Class

Pronounced Sha-abi the literal translation from Egyptian is “Native”.

This is currently a hot style of music in Cairo made popular by Hakim and most recently Saad. As with all things that were “old” and are now “new”, Shaabi music is inspired from the streets and daily life of Cairo and reflects the energetic, positive, romantic, and some times lighthearted silliness that is unique to the sense of Egyptian irony and humor. This is not a new style of music, but rather a renaissance and re-emergence of its popularity, which is a reflection of the people.

The dance is a reflection of the music. Basically it is a root form of Raks Sharqi and all the movements can be stylized to fit with Raks Sharqi, Beledi or Saidi, depending on the music used. Shaabi dancing has less restrictions of movement and is generally more simple, fun, bouncy, flirtatious and playful in nature.

We will also touch on music, costuming and how to use this dance form and when it is appropriate with-in a performance.

We will be working on technique of movement and combinations related to the use of the music, including some hand gestures.

I will have a CD available of music for purchase in the class.
