Shareem SarShareem has been involved with belly dancing and costuming for over 30 years. Starting at a local recreation center that offered lessons in this gracious art form, she eventually sought more professional instruction through a dance studio and by constantly attending workshops and seminars. She designed and constructed costumes for the dance studio, which were mostly in the cabaret style. She later became involved with a medieval re-creation society which led to research of Middle Eastern and North African clothing. Then in 1995 she became part of a small troupe specializing in the tribal-fusion style which brought her to a new type of dance and subsequent costuming. In addition to creating and sewing dance skirts, caftans, pantaloons, veils and cholis, Shareem has made professional hand-beaded bras and hip-belts, woven tribal tassel belts using an inkle loom, and produced a limited number of rings, pendants, and brooches in sterling silver. She has made her own glass beads, constructed wooden A-frames for six-foot signs, makes tribal jewelry, and sews everything from tent covers to leather slippers. Shareem enjoys craftwork, dancing, playing finger cymbals and pounding on her drum. She encourages all dancers (any age, male or female) to explore, express and enjoy this very vibrant dance form. |
