Khaleeji dance is the dance of the Persian Gulf States and Saudi Arabia using theKhaleegy rhythm. In Arabic, this word means "gulf". Bellydancers use it to refer to the style of music and dance from the Persian Gulf/Arabian peninsula area - Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, and Oman. It uses a particular rhythm that American musicians and dancers often call "Saudi". The women's costume is called a thobe nashal - an oversized overdress - which is a very full, often highly embroidered caftan. The thobe nashal is used as both costume and prop. If you have a throbe, please feel free to bring it with you. This is an excellent early moring class for those of you taking a full load of classes all weekend.
